For their opening league game in what should be an enthralling National One campaign, the Cornish Pirates take on Newbury at the Recreation Ground, Camborne, this coming Sunday 31st August kick off 3pm
Having watched new faces in action in two useful pre-season 'friendlies' against near neighbours Redruth and visiting Italian 'Super10' team Almaviva Capitolina, supporters will now be able to witness the true credentials of what appears to be a very able Cornish Pirates squad.
The performance against Almaviva Capitolina was impressive, the team running in six tries for a second week running by playing a 15-man brand of rugby that is thoroughly entertaining to watch. Coach Mark Hewitt commented: "We want to play with pace and tempo, but to also be solid at the set piece. The new guys have settled quickly and brought more of an edge to what we've got, with there also more competition for places."
As for Newbury, theirs is a challenge not to be taken lightly. During the close season they have appointed former Bristol 'Shogun' and England player Ben Sturnham as their head coach, him already having wasted no time in persuading a number of players to move east along the M4. Two former Pirates, wing Jonny Hylton and centre Marc Sweeney, are also in the Newbury Blues playing squad.
Tickets for Sunday's game can be purchased from the ticket office 01736-331961, or through the club's website at www.cornish-pirates.com.
